EFT: Tapping for Cats

I was introduced to the elegant, simplicity of the “Emotional Freedom Technique,” also known as “The Tapping Solution,” by my writing partner, Jean Hofve, DVM as we put the finishing chapters together for our book as a writing team, entitled The Complete Guide to Holistic Cat Care, as up until 2008 I had never even heard of it before. I was amazed at how efficacious it was for both myself and my own companion cats, personally as well as my clients and their animals. It can easily be adapted to dogs or other animals but for now we shall speak directly to using EFT Tapping for our feline companions. Please make note of the photograph of Dr. Hofve that she prepared using herself, as a reference to correspond with the list of the various “Tapping Points” which I have listed below, for a simple way to begin “Tapping” as soon as the spirit moves you.

EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) is a method of tapping certain points along traditional Chinese acupuncture meridians in order to resolve emotional, behavioral, and physical problems. EFT is one of the new school of meridian energy therapies, and was developed by Gary Craig who discovered that by tapping on these points while keeping a specific problem in mind, negative energy is cleared, even when stored away deeply in the human subconscious mind. Deeply rooted issues can often resolve for people in a rapid and dramatic way and the same positive results also holds true for our companion animals as well. There are many renowned doctors and veterinarians and other practitioners incorporating EFT/Tapping into their holistic paradigm. The reason for this is, it really works!

EFT is easily adapted to remote or proxy (surrogate) use. The technique can be learned in a few minutes. First bring to mind the problem. If it is a large or deep-seated problem, such as a phobia, it is best to focus on one specific aspect of the problem at a time. Instead of a general or large (global) issue like “litter box problems,” think of, instead the specific; “Fluffy urinates under the table.” Think of the problem as a forest: To get rid of the forest, you have to remove individual trees one at a time. Minor problems can often be cleared up with one or two rounds of tapping. You will be amazed. However, quite often we need to Tap on ourselves before we begin to work with our companion animals because the particular behavior is probably only a problem for you. This because Fluffy may be perfectly happy having a “wee” under the table. Often we have much work to do on ourselves before we begin surrogate tapping for others be they humans or animals. However, using EFT on cats (and others) is especially easy: You don’t even need to tap on the cat. While animals do have meridians and points, the best way to perform EFT on animals is by surrogate or proxy tapping. This means you tap on yourself to make the changes happen for the cat. It helps to use a bit of positive visualization at the same time but this ability is not a prerequisite.

Here’s how to do surrogate EFT/Tapping for your cats:

1. First, think of a phrase or a sentence that describes the problem succinctly and clearly to you. You can say, “Sidney is allergic to chicken,” or “Sam keeps pestering me while I’m cooking dinner.” Surround the statement of intent with the words, “Even though [name] [problem], I deeply and profoundly love and accept [name].”

2. Place the palm of your hand on the Sore Spot (also known as the collarbone spot). When you can feel the warmth of your hand through your clothes, rub the hand round in a small circle, and say the opening statement, which is the statement of intent inside the framework articulated in step 1.

3. Repeat the opening statement three times, continuously rubbing the Sore (collarbone) Spot.

4. Now choose a shortened version of the opening statement, called the Reminder phrase (“this problem”). Tap with one or two fingers, five to ten times, on the following spots (either side is fine) as you say the statement of intent on each point once.

EYEBROW: Where the bone behind your eyebrow turns into the bridge of your nose.

CORNER OF THE EYE: On the bone at the outside corner of your eye.

UNDER THE EYE: On the bone just below your eye, in line with your pupil if you look straight ahead.

UNDER THE NOSE: Between your nose and your upper lip.

CHIN: In the indentation between your chin and your lower lip.

UNDERARM: In line with a man’s nipples on the side of the body; somewhat lower and toward the back for a woman or where the bra fits under the armpit.

COLLARBONE (also know as the “Sore Spot”): In the angle formed by your collarbone and the breastbone.

CROWN: Pat the crown of your head with your flat open hand.

5. When you’re finished with each round, inhale and exhale deeply. Perhaps even have a glass of purified or slightly alkaline water, or spring water with a few drops of an appropriate Bach flower remedy or other flower essence. You can continue to repeat the treatment with different statements. Your intuition will often suggest new phrases as you do this. Different statements create different changes, so experiment with many different forms of wording and ways of saying something until you feel comfortable.

For chronic physical or behavioral problems, you may need many rounds over a period of time, exploring different aspects.

When you focus your attention on an animal, you connect your individual energy systems together. When you then focus your attention on a specific aspect of that energy system (a problem, disease, behavior, etc.), and you change your system by tapping on the points, you are also changing the animal’s system through that connection.

EFT can be applied to a variety of physical and emotional problems, including behavioral issues associated with aging and even your cats sexual territorial issues, which still seem to come even when spayed and neutered.

For example, you might work with the following aspects for a cat who sprays urine.

“Even though Fluffy feels a need to spray, I deeply and completely love and accept him.”

“Even though Fluffy feels his territory is being threatened…”

“Even though Fluffy doesn’t get along with Muffy…”

“Even though I get upset when Fluffy sprays…” (This and similar aspects address the guardian’s emotional issues, which can be a significant part of the problem!)

Keep your heart open as you do this and you might sense tremendous empathy and get a non verbal communication message from you cat which may help convey his point of view.

Try EFT on everything: allergies, asthma, relationship problems, past traumas or abuse, pain, disease. Everything with and without a pulse, even machines seems to some how connect and cooperate with the EFT/Tapping current of energy, much like Reiki. It has been said by quantum physicians often that particles behave differently when they are observed. Perhaps everything in our multiverse responds to loving intent, when asked with gratitude and offered from the heart. This isn’t a secret anymore. It’s there for the asking.

There is much to learn in the wonderful world of EFT/Tapping and there really is no wrong way to do it, if your intent is honest and for the greater good. Have fun exploring this new tool and use it often on yourself and those close to you. If you get stuck you can reach out to a professional EFT/Tapping practitioner who specializes in the area you might find helpful and you can book an appointment, most likely for a telephone consultation. You will find that EFT/Tapping becomes a happy, healthy addiction.

You may wish to explore one of the largest EFT Tapping groups on line and that is The Tapping Insiders Club, where you can explore a wealth of DVD and CD training programs, on all things related to EFT/Tapping.
