Alternative and Complementary Therapies: AHCC (Active Hexose Correlated Compound)

As many of you know I have since last November been dealing with a health crisis of my own. It was then that I was diagnosed with Ovarian/peritoneal cancer. I had a huge surgery on November 25th which was followed by 6 rounds of chemo. I will share from time to time here at my blog some very interesting alternative therapies, protocols and supplements that I have found to support traditional therapies.

Please note, that everyone should consult with their own health practitioners before embarking on any new therapies, as I do not give medical advice and therefore these blogs are for your information only.

The first in this series of blogs is regarding AHCC (Active Hexose Correlated Compound).

What is AHCC?

AHCC is developed using a patented process from the mycelia of several species of mushrooms. AHCC is different from other mushroom extracts because it is very rich in alphaglucans (rather than betaglucans) and has very low molecular weight, helping facilitate absorption by the body.

AHCC helps the immune system of chemo patients

Chemo patients, and I was no exception, suffer from a condition called neutropenia, which means our white counts become severely suppressed from the chemo drugs. Traditional ways to boost the immune system include an injection called Neupogen. I personally would have several of these injections following each chemo treatment however there are some interesting supplements that may have value as well in supporting the immune system and AHCC is one of them. This product has been used to help support the immune system of patients undergoing chemotherapy and radiation in over 700 clinics and hospitals in Japan.

AHCC may support immune response by promoting natural production of NK cells, T-Cells, B-lymphocytes, and antibodies as well as supporting macrophage activity. These cells are part of the immune system which help the body identify and respond to abnormal and foreign entities.

In addition to helping support a healthy immune response, AHCC may also help promote liver health and an appropriate response to free radicals.

AHCC is another great product offered at my Apricot Power affiliate website. Here, I make a small commission when you make a purchase which greatly helps me with the costs of my personal care and treatment.
