The Health Benefits of Smiling!

“Everytime you smile at someone, it is an action of love, a gift to that person, a beautiful thing.”
~ Mother Teresa

It’s so easy in our everyday lives to become consumed by all all the things we have to do, as well as the financial pressures we must endure when money is tight. Feeling down and negative about it all, from time to time strikes all of us, but even when you feel your own stress building up inside you, did you know that perhaps the very best thing you can do is put on a happy face? Yes, even if it means you have to force a phoney smile.

“Peace begins with a smile.”
~ Mother Teresa

It has been said that a photograph or the on camera face of a wholesome female model or actress (perhaps actor), looking right into the camera induces people to buy products–so we know advertisers know the power of a smile! We all inherently know the power of a smile too! We feel good whilst smiling and we feel good when we are smiled at.

Recently however, we find that the simple, natural act of smiling actually helps our health by lowering our heart rate and relieving our stress levels.

An interesting study, took place at the University of Kansas in Lawrence, required participants to hold a variety of facial expressions while enduring stress-provoking situations. The researchers recruited 169 college-age volunteers, of whom half were men and half were women. They were provided with chopsticks and taught to hold them in their mouths while making certain facial expressions. They produced a neutral look, a smile that only involved the mouth, and a Duchenne smile, which is more of a true smile that requires activity in muscles of both the mouth and the eyes. To half of the subjects, the suggestion was made that the Duchnenne smile was to be made like a smile. The other half was simply directed on the muscular action needed.

The entire group of participants were told they would be multi-tasking while holding the chopsticks in their mouths and keeping a particular expression on their faces. The tasks they needed to perform were designed to be difficult and therefore heighten their stress levels. For instance, the volunteers were made to trace a star shape using their non-dominant hand working off a mirror reflection or plunging a hand into ice water (not something we usually would want to smile about).

The researchers monitored the heart rates of the subjects both during and after the tasks. The smilers had lower heart rates than those wearing neutral expressions. The greatest difference was found in those who executed a Duchenne smile that is most similar to a true smile. However, even the participants who formed a smile with their mouths only had lower heart rates than those keeping a neutral face, suggesting that any sort of grin–even a completely fake smile–can be beneficial.

Researchers know today that we produce greater quantities of both adrenaline and cortisol when undergoing stress. This “fight or flight” or as I add even faint reaction, increases the heart rate and affects blood flow to ensure the vital organs of the core of the body are receiving their fair share at the expense of the extremities. Therefore, having a lower heart rate means we are not feeling or reacting to the stress nearly as much.

According to the results of this study, smiling would appear to have some sort of calming effect. In fact, blood pressure rates were also noted to be lower in many of the smiling volunteers, but not all. Since the same hormones in the body that affect heart rate also increase blood pressure, it’s interesting that those results were not as consistent. The difference could possibly be due to high blood pressure being a long-term condition that develops over time and is affected by overeating and other poor health habits, whereas a quickened heart rate is generally short term. Then again, in some people the higher blood pressure could have been the result of hardened arteries, which would not have changed no matter how much one smiled.

Earlier research about smiling has produced mixed results. A 2011 study at Michigan State University in East Lansing found that people who had to be polite all day at work and produce fake smiles ended up with overall worse moods than others. Yet, when those same subjects were told to conjure their smiles based on happy thoughts, both their moods and their productivity levels increased.

Most of us have heard that when we smile we release a chemical message deep within our brain known as an Endorphin. Once released these Endorphins travel down our spine sending feel good messages throughout the rest of our body.

These Endorphins are known to be strong enough to reduce symptoms of physical, or emotional pain, as they
envelop us in a nice warm feeling of well being. They are a chemical of approximately the same strength as another pharmaceutical chemical that we all know of known as Morphine.

Endorphins have that wonderful ability to make us feel happy, and whenever we all smile, we release them. So even if you are not happy when you begin to smile, you will be afterwards, and the more often that you smile then the happier you will feel!

I think, since it costs us nothing to smile and I know I feel better when I do then why not smile as often as possible. If the first thing we would do when faced with stressful people or situations was smile we might unnerve them to such a degree that we neutralize the stressful event right in its tracks. This might even turn into a giggle or full on laugh fest.

It’s nice to see that this has been the subject of scientific scrutiny but, If you think about it, there really is no downside to smiling. It’s time to be proud of our laugh lines which I think are far better than frown lines. And besides stress is very dangerous for all of us: to our mental status, physical health, and overall well-being, it even upsets our companion animals, so for their sake, smile!

A smile may not be a ‘cure all’ but it certainly seems to help us get through all that is going on in the world, or even some of the problems in our own life. It would truly be great if we could truly lower or normalize our heart rate and stress level even if just by a tiny bit; it’s certainly a start.

The act of smiling at or with the one you love can keep you both in the most healthful stage of all known as the honeymoon stage of a loving relationship!

I’ll take smiling over taking blood pressure or anti-anxiety medication or developing a stress-induced ailment. It’s worth remembering that smiling is contagious and you have the power to make other people smile, and you can do this by simply passing your smile on to others.

Let’s starting spreading smiles because they might just turn to all out laughter, just like what happened to these folks on a German train before everyone knew it, everyone was laughing!

It all starts with a smile!

Vaccination: A two Edged Sword for Both Pets and People

Let’s Take a Look at the Potential Dangers involved with Vaccination!

By Celeste Yarnall, Ph.D

What actually is vaccination?

Vaccination is also referred to as Inoculation and according to McGraw-Hill Science & Technology Encyclopedia is defined as:

“The process of introducing a microorganism or suspension of microorganism into a culture medium. The medium may be (1) a solution of nutrients required by the organism or a solution of nutrients plus agar; (2) a cell suspension (tissue culture); (3) embryonated egg culture; or (4) animals, for example, rat, mouse, guinea pig, hamster, monkey, birds, or human being. When animals are used, the purpose usually is the activation of the immunological defenses against the organism. This is a form of vaccination, and quite often the two terms are used interchangeably. Both constitute a means of producing an artificial but active immunity against specific organisms, although the length of time given by such protection may vary widely with different organisms.”

There is also another way to look at and define this controversial issue offered by Craig Stellpflug, in his article for entitled, Myth Busted: Vaccinations are not Immunizations where he explains that,
“In vaccines, an antigen is injected into the body to produce a reaction and the immune system responds in the form of antibodies, but antibody presence does not confer immunity.” Stellpflug states that, “Vaccines should never be called immunizations because that is a misnomer. Immunity and vaccinations are two different subjects altogether.”

Have you ever met an unvaccinated child or adult?

I know several quite well. I am always amazed at how bright they are, how healthy they are and how little chronic diseases they seem to suffer from. It seems to go with the territory that their moms feed them a great diet, usually organic, encourage them to practice some sport or dance type activity, raise them with companion animals, and overall lead a healthy life style, as individuals and as a family. The parents of the kids that I know are educated and have conducted some pretty thorough research and looked at the risks vs benefits pretty closely. I am not talking about children who are malnourished or impoverished as that would be an entirely different discussion. I’m just talking about kids from middle class homes and families, that I know personally and that you might have encountered, perhaps in your own neighborhood and circle of friends, if their parents dared to tell you their kids secret. Maybe they were even home schooled and seemed to think a bit outside the box. Maybe they used high quality supplements such as Moxxor, see like the baby above gets! Maybe the parents are Vegan and did not wish to have animal material injected into their children. Maybe they just object to having their kids forced to be jabbed with a syringe loaded with suspicious substances or cultured in animal products, see  that have never been thoroughly tested or proven to be safe or effective!

My first hand evidence with these unvaccinated babies, young children and young adults, and now even some of whom have babies of their own, is clearly anecdotal and the minute I open the lid to this pandora’s box the kitchen sink is thrown at me, about how wonderful vaccines are, and how many lives they save, and how insane it is to not do it, and what are my credentials to have the audacity to suggest questioning this now nearly sacred procedure! The incredible health and high IQ’s of these kids has got to be just a coincidence, right? Not! I offer in response to these inevitable skeptics; just how insane is it to push chemically induced ‘herd’ medicine and a one size fits all medical model at everyone on the planet? It’s a good idea to change the subject at that point as things always get heated and it’s a win/lose scenario one way or another!

I found an interesting Timeline that helps us put the subject of vaccination into its proper historical perspective. When we look at it in this way it seems like such a wonderful scientific advancement. It seems to make sense in many ways. See

We learn at that the story of vaccines did not begin with the first vaccine which seems to have always been credited to Edward Jenner. (It was indeed Jenner who observed a group of milkmaids resistance to ‘cow pox’ and it was Jenner whose use of cowpox pustules seemed to provide protection against smallpox). Although we hear this story quite often, we learn here ostensibly that the saga begins with a long history of infectious disease in humans, and in particular, with early uses of smallpox material to provide immunity to that disease.

Evidence is reported from the Timeline group, that the Chinese employed smallpox inoculation (or variolation, as such use of smallpox material was called) as early as 1,000 CE. It was practiced in Africa and Turkey as well, before it spread to Europe and the Americas.

Edward Jenner’s innovations, began with his successful 1796 use of cowpox material to create immunity to smallpox, and this quickly made the practice widespread. His method underwent medical and technological changes over the next 200 years and we have heard again and again how this eventually resulted in the eradication of smallpox (there is a dark side to Jenner’s work because his own son died of Tuberculosis, perhaps because vaccination impaired his immune system, but let’s leave that out of our discussion. I may tackle that another time).

Yes, I too know the propaganda rather well after 20 years research on this subject matter and yes my own parents (and their parents) bought it and even I bought into it when I was a young mother, ‘hook line and sinker’ as we all got the jab! I find it interesting that ‘the powers that be’ stopped giving the small pox vaccine because the side effects to it became pretty horrific and deadly.

In reviewing the Timeline above, one might wish to have been a fly on the wall and listened in on the debates amongst religious scholars vs the science guys of the day. It might have sounded something like this: “If man was created in Gods image and therefore perfect why isn’t he/she perfect without this jab?” That’s actually a good question. You’d think a babies first food, their mothers colostrum and the building of a strong immune system, by being allowed to catch childhood diseases, building immunity to them naturally, be nourished with good food, clean water and proper hygiene, would/should be all that is needed. However today, we are told a different tale and vaccination due to fear of getting sick has become so common place that there is actually a new kind of fear model circulating that involves the so-called threat of the unvaccinated child or adult!

Is there any validity to these fears about being unvaccinated?

In a recent article by Ethan Huff for see a recent survey released by is reported, which debunks the notion that unvaccinated children are not as well off as those individuals who have been vaccinated. It seems that the unvaccinated kids are less likely to develop allergies, autoimmune disorders and neurological problems along with endocrine diseases and other illnesses that their vaccinated counterparts endure.

According to Huff, a homeopathic practitioner named Andreas Bachmair put together heath data on more than 8,000 unvaccinated children in at least 15 different countries and then compared it to the health data compiled on more than 17,400 vaccinated children in a German Study. This study was called, KiGGS – The German Health Interview and Examination Survey for Children and Adolescents.

The ages of the children involved ranged from 0 to 17 years of age, but typically were 8 years of age or younger. Huff explains that both studies used the same criteria for collecting data on these children’s health. More on this subject can be found here:

Huff reports that “In every single health category evaluated as part of both studies, the overall health of unvaccinated children was leaps and bounds ahead of the vaccinated children. The allergy rate among vaccinated children, for instance, was more than double the allergy rate among unvaccinated children. And worse, vaccinated children were found to be nearly eight times more prone to developing asthma or chronic Bronchitis than were unvaccinated children.”

Huff, includes in his excellent article, that another finding observed between the two groups was the category of auto immune disorder see: Apparently less than half of one percent of unvaccinated children were found to have developed an autoimmune disease, however roughly seven percent of vaccinated children developed one. Huff states, that according to the US National Institutes of Health (NIH), nearly 25 percent of Americans today suffer from at least one autoimmune disorder.

There were other health area’s where the unvaccinated kids fared better than the vaccinated ones and those included neurodermatitis, herpes, otitis media (common ear infections) see,
hay fever, hyperactivity, scoliosis, epilepsy and seizures, migraine headaches, and thyroid disease. Huff includes, “The only category where disease rates were roughly equal between the two groups was in the category of diabetes mellitus, a disease which affects only about 0.2% of children under the age of 20.”

I would like to close with the exploration of the thought I offered above in that proposed dialogue between a clergyman and a scientist; is it not possible (and I’m only asking a hypothetical question) that we were created perfectly by a perfect creator and live in a perfect universe, as suggested in the book, ‘Hubble Reveals Creation by an Awe-Inspiring Power,’ by J. Paul Hutchins? See What effect would/does chemical compounds, including toxic substances and heavy metals actually do to us on a quantum/micro and a macro level? If there is a God Particle within each of us which is suggested by the exploration of and search for the Higgs Boson particle, what do these un-natural chemical substances do to it?

Many of you know that my passion has been helping people and their companion animals, both cats and dogs transition to a holistic lifestyle. One of the things of great concern has been with a specific vaccine site sarcoma in cats induced by certain feline vaccinations. I think we need to open our minds at long last that vaccines are not the safe procedure the media and medical establishment wishes us to believe. They come with risks and this article is very interesting in that respect, see

This article further shares that: “One demographic in U.S. society that does not embrace vaccinations, the Amish, have remarkable statistics that we need to consider further, e.g., the autism rate is one in 15,000! Plus, their children, who usually work the farms in some way virtually have no allergies.
It goes on to offer that Dr. Paul G. King, PhD, offers the following information that needs to be acknowledged and applauded:..’ non-mercury exposed Amish children (those who were not vaccinated or did not live near a coal-fired power plant), the number with “autism” was “0″ zero. And in Dr. Eisenstein’s practice in Chicago, IL called The Home First children who are all breastfed and not vaccinated, there were reportedly NO cases of autism and only 1 child with asthma in a population in excess of 30,000 [children]. But all of these are only considered “anecdotal” reports that the CDC dismissed instead of even trying to confirm their validity (for obvious reasons).

For updates on issues surrounding vaccination controversies like these which I have shared, I highly recommend the site which offers some alternative views which you won’t see covered in mainstream media. I found the posting regarding potential liver damage to also be of special interest.

In every discussion on vaccination the subject of vaccines eradicating Polio and paralysis usually comes up because we don’t see children in iron lungs any more but we do have a new disease similar to it with a different name and the children go on ventilators instead, but this video offers a different slant on that subject as well You can read more about this breaking news here:
